Encouragement Passionate Mom

Book Release Hair Drama

 The drama began last Friday.

I was up before dawn to hit the highway for a 25 minutes trek to fetch 36 different kinds of donuts from Nicola’s — they’re worth it.  The purpose was to surprise the Family First team because iMOM hit 1,000,000 unique visitors in the month of January.  As I drove, I was tuned into the JOY fm. I love Carmen the comedic radio host and soon became caught up in her dress drama.   She was invited to a big wedding in Nashville and needed a dress.

A dim bulb went on in my barely awake brain.  I was going to Nashville in 10 days to film a video for The Passionate Mom book release.

She said the problem was that she didn’t like dresses.  I don’t have to wear a dress in the video, but I do need to look presentable and did a quick check in the review mirror.

Note to self: Color hair and when was the last time you had it cut?

Carmen said the other problem was that everyone in Nashville was like super hipster? I think she did say hipster.  So she felt pressured to look really good.

The bulb in my brain got about 60 watts brighter.  My hair is, well, not hipster.

I haven’t made a significant hairstyle change in…  And I do not have high lights or low lights.  However, I do color it regularly – myself.  The cost is $8 a month — such a deal and so easy.   My to go-to girls are Cool Carol and Medium Mona — my Natural Instincts friends.

Carol and Mona may be Natural but they are not Nashville!

I missed the donut exit.  My mind was racing to my last haircut.

You see, to save time and money, I just trim it myself in between cuts.  Was it November?  No, no I remember wearing my hair in a pony tail to the Family First banquet because I needed a hair cut.  So my last hair cut was in SEPTEMBER?!

Great, what was I thinking going to Nashville to shoot a video without thinking about what I would look like?

Next chance I got (Saturday morning) I assessed my hair and panicked.  I really needed a cut.  But I really didn’t have time this week and what if William didn’t have any appointments?

Then, I opened the drawer and pulled out the scissors.  I could do this.  I trimmed an inch off the dead ends in the back.  Helpful, but I didn’t look hipster.  Next thought– I have layers but what if I added bangs?  Bangs are “in.”  Snip, snip.  Uh, I think I made it worse.

This morning I couldn’t stand it.  I now have short bangs, long grown out layers and a blunt cut in back.  Sheesh.  Not to be confused with she-she.

And the stand-by pony tail is not going to get it in Nashville or anywhere else.  Think of all your favorite authors… Beth Moore, Ann Voskamp, Lysa Terkeurst–do you see any of them looking hipster in a pony tail?!

I called William.  I begged him.  I canceled a meeting.  I’m getting a haircut.

I doubt I will be hipster but right now I would settle for presentable.  I am too chicken to try high lights or go short with the video shoot looming, but what about a long bob?

long bob

Seriously, do you think I could do this without the highlights, gorgeous tan and perfectly structured face? Opinions or prayer would be a huge help!
